Same as carpet, artificial turf looks bad when it’s matted down. Why does one synthetic grass flop over like a wet taco, while another stands tall and looks natural? It really doesn’t take a Ph.D. in Turfology to grasp the concept.

The polyethylene yarns in today’s turf are manufactured to stand perpendicular to the backing, but with suppleness and resiliency similar to natural grass. The idea is to look and feel like a natural lawn, and synthetic grass does this well. Sometimes it does the job too well.

Under heavy traffic, the blades of natural grass get stomped and matted, and synthetic grass behaves the same way. But while Mother Nature can regenerate or grow new fibers, synthetic grass needs the benefit of a good brushing – or forward-thinking engineering – to look good again.

Installation techniques, infill in particular, helps prevent matting in artificial turf. If no one walked on a synthetic lawn, the fibers wouldn’t be subjected to pressure and wouldn’t bend. Because most synthetic grass will be walked on, infilling -- distributing granules among the synthetic grass blades and working it into the pile – is necessary. In filling the voids, proper infill gives the long synthetic fibers something to lean on when they are pressed and bent, enhancing the resilient performance characteristics of the yarn.

The choice of turf also determines whether turf is going to lay down on the job. Synthetic grass with wider blades of thicker microns typically stand up best to heavy traffic best. Also, in general, shorter blades (such as those found in SGW’s Pet Turf) will mat down less than taller blades.

Modern synthetic grass is applicable for all seasons and all reasons, with dedicated products available for unique applications. Today’s point to ponder: Do you -- or your customer – and Fido need a specialized pet turf with all the goodies?

A standard installation of artificial turf may satisfy landscaping purposes, but is not necessarily ideal for the special demands of a lawn used by dogs. Certain common denominators of synthetic grass, especially polyethylene fiber and urethane backing, are assets for a pet turf installation. However, additional ingredients and installation procedures are usually necessary to ensure the turf performs as intended … and smells acceptable.

For owners of anything larger than a tiny dog, or multiple pets, the big issue is urine. Synthetic fiber will out-perform natural grass in many areas – it won’t spot, fade or turn brown, and the polyethylene is soft on pads yet durable and non-absorbent. Perforated urethane backings are also non-absorbent and engineered for proper drainage. The system also cleans up nicely with a rinse of water and/or a household cleaner.

For additional protection, consider these value-added components of the Pet Ultimate K-9 System:

Pet Turf Our special brand of synthetic grass is designed specifically for use with dogs of all sizes and breeds, in back yards, kennels or veterinary clinics. It’s a monofilament blend of field and olive green polyethylene yarns, tufted to a 1-inch pile that facilitates drainage. The grass fibers are UV-stabilized and won’t stain or fade, insect- and flame-resistant, anti-acid and lead-free and 100% recyclable. Pet Turf’s unique formula of urethane-coated backing provides superior strength and wearability and isn’t water-soluble. Solid waste is easy to remove, and the grass rinses clean with no muddy paw prints. Plus: Pet Turf looks and feels like real thing, so dogs are attracted to “do their business” on it... Since then, the use of artificial turf in sports fields in general has grown exponentially, and the technology has come a long way.

Artificial turf for football fields goes through a special manufacturing process that creates a durable product that can withstand the duress caused by major contact sports. The process begins with the blending of polyethylene, polyurethane, and sometimes nylon, combined with different color tints to give it a realistic look. After these components are blended, the mixture goes into an extruder, and long yarn-like fibers are woven and shaped. The yarns are then tufted onto a strong backing, and a second backing coated with latex is added. Lastly, the final product is cured with heat. Sound complicated? It is. With its increase in popularity, more manufacturers are improving modernized products with cutting edge technology. The growing demand calls for artificial grass products that serve very specific functions and purposes. Therefore, the modern turf market contains a variety much larger than when the industry first began.

A widespread use of artificial turf that dates back to several decades ago is for athletic surfaces and fields. This includes American football fields, soccer fields, baseball and softball fields, tennis courts, and lacrosse fields. Synthetic field turf is designed with durability and strength in mind. The composition of athletic turf allows for similarities with natural fields in the feel of each game, ensuring that athletes perform their best during each use. It is reported that certain sports injuries caused by mud, potholes, and uneven surfaces can be eliminated with artificial turf fields. The clean installation of field turf for any sport enables each field to have a clean and precise surface, specific to any measurement requirements. For fields that have sections, such as a baseball field, specific areas can utilize artificial grass due to its high customizability. (... click below to continue)

For decades, artificial turf has been a part of amateur and professional baseball and softball. Throughout the years, our breakthrough technology and state-of-the-art manufacturing have made SGW grass ideal for these sports because of our construction. Our baseball artificial turf’s unique design helps to enhance performance, while minimizing maintenance and maintaining safety athletes.

Artificial grass for baseball and softball has been specifically designed to mimic a natural field, while yielding added benefits. Modern field turf is manufactured by undergoing a process of yarn extrusion that enables each blade to be cut individually. These yarns can be extruded in different shapes that help with resilience and memory after high traffic and athletic performance.
